We have been asked what is causing the price increase in tank water heaters.

Over the last couple of year’s new manufacturing regulations to make tank water heaters more efficient has been an ongoing goal. So in in 2015, the Impending changes to energy efficiency standards for water heaters and subsequent price increase is due to take effect this year, and while they will save some money over time in energy bills, they will also result in a sharp increase in the price of water heaters.

Water heaters manufactured to the new standards will require more material in insulation and in some cases, heat pumps as part of the unit. In addition to higher unit prices, they will require more effort to install. The larger units will require bigger delivery trucks, and more manpower to move and install. This will probably result in increased costs on installation, as well. Another issue is that many homes have their water heaters in the attic, and the new tank water heater’s may not fit the attic stair opening, thus requiring the plumbing to be re-routed to the first floor (which brings in another concern; space) or making a larger access to accommodate the larger water heater.

So what is a homeowner to do? The good news is that there are still standard water heaters (2014 models) available for sale, but once this stock is sold out, only the newer tank water heaters will be available. Therefore, three options:

  1. Purchase a standard 2014 model tank water heater now
  2. Convert to a tankless water heater (incurs additional cost)
  3. Purchase the new more efficient and larger tank water heater

So, if your water heater is near the end of its life, you should replace it while the less expensive models are still available. The average useful life expectancy for a water heater is eight to 12 years. If it’s been 10 years since you replaced your water heater, it will almost certainly need to be replaced in the next year or two anyway. Doing so now means you can still purchase a 2014 model water heater, which will be less expensive, smaller to fit your space and easier to install.
